There's a new phone service in town! Internet phone service uses the power of the internet to help people make phone calls from home or business for as low as $9.95 per month. OmniLEC, based in East Peoria, is a licensed public utility in Illinois and Indiana. It is the second largest phone company, by number of counties served, in Illinois. After five years as a private wholesale telecommunications carrier, OmniLEC is now offering commercial and residential phone solutions. "In 2004, nearly one million people subscribed to an Internet phone company and nearly two million will subscribe in 2005.
OmniLEC uses Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technology to allow customers to utilize their Internet connection as a telephone service. A high-speed (broadband) internet connection and the OmniLEC adapter are all that is required. Phone calls can even be made from a laptop computer. Your phone, phone system, phone number, directory listing and advertising ALL remain the same. Nothing changes except the customer's phone bill.
OmniLEC offers traditional phone features, such as voice mail and three-way calling and enhanced features such as the OmniNumber, a service that combines multiple numbers into a find me-follow me format. For example, the caller dials the OmniNumber, and the service can be programmed to ring your home phone, your office phone and your cell phone all at the same time. You never miss a call.
OmniLEC differs from traditional phone service in several ways. OmniLEC is more flexible, and currently, legislation has determined that Internet phone service technology is tax-free.
OmniLEC does not require contracts; service is month-to-month and several plans are offered. Billing is simple. The phone service is being launched in Illinois with plans to expand to Indians in 2005.
