Packetizer Suffers Site Outage

December 21, 2003

Packetizer suffered an outage this weekend when its former domain name registrar, register.com, deleted all DNS records associated with the site while performing a transfer to a new registrar.

Generally, transferring domains from one registrar to another does introduce problems. However, it can be done without impacting customers. Unfortunately, a new system introduced at register.com prevented Packetizer from making a smooth transition to a new DNS server. This system, www.my-account-manager.com, was a further source of frustration due to the fact that register.com would only provide e-mail response to problems, thus taking days to resolve. (In fact, this poor service was the reason for moving all Packetizer-owned domains to a new registrar.)

All packetizer.com services are now fully restored. Over the next week, packetizer.com will be moving all of its other domains. This may introduce a few problems accessing some information, but we do not expect to see a lengthy outage of the same magnitude as experienced in the past 3 days.
