Nimbula, a Menlo Park “cloud computing” startup founded by two former Amazon.com executives, has won $15 million in funding in a round led by Palo Alto venture capital firm Accel Partners, the companies announced Monday.

Also participating is existing investor Sequoia Capital, a Menlo Park VC firm, which earlier invested $5.75 million in Nimbula along with Palo Alto software maker VMware.

Nimbula’s “cloud computing operating system” software allows corporate information-technology workers to manage data that’s stored both on-site and at off-premises data centers.

The company was founded by Chris Pinkham and Willem van Biljon, who led the development of Amazon’s EC2 cloud computing service.

“Accel Partners has a superb track record in identifying winning technology companies in high-growth markets, and we are delighted that they recognize the value of our vision,” Pinkham, Nimbula’s CEO, said in a news release.

Accel partner Ping Li will join Nimbula’s board of directors. “We have been active in the private cloud computing space and spoke with many customers looking for a solution,” Li said in the statement. “We identified Nimbula as the only vendor having the technology and proven experience to capture the leadership position in this growing market.”
