VoIP users saving $44 per month: claim

Users of new phone-over-internet technology are saving an average $44 per month on costs, a survey claims.

According to an AAP report, Australian telcos are scrambling to grab market share of the latest phone technology, Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), which takes analog audio signals and translates them into digital data.

The survey conducted with members of the Australian Telecommunications Users Group (ATUG) and customers from Australian broadband telephone company engin, found respondents were saving an average of 33 per cent, or $44.20 per month using VoIP.

Market analysts say VoIP technology has the potential to completely rework the world's phone systems.

Staff reporter adds: Contacted for further details, an ATUG spokesman said the survey was proprietary and sponsored by a number of companies, among them AAPT and Commander.
